Welcome

To Ober Nord Westfalen, a state which exists only in the imaginations of those wargamers lucky enough to be inspired by Brigadier Young and Lieutenant Colonel Lawford's book, "Charge!  Or How to Play Wargames"

Clicking on the links above will take you on a journey through Ober Nord Westfalen

I have enjoyed many happy hours, not only in war gaming against others, but also in creating my own Imagi-nation, together with its army, history, people and personalities, to which end the contributors to the "Emperor versus Elector" campaign have rendered generous help and inspiration.

North West Germany c1730

Image #3 - Map Showing Ober Nord Westfalen in Red

Ober Nord Westfalen is an enclave in North-West Germany.  Its territory is marked in red on the above map.  As can be seen it is bounded by both the North and Baltic Seas, The Netherlands, Denmark, Hannover and Westfalen.  The major industries are fishing in the coastal areas, together with limited whaling.  The northern rural areas produce both grain and roots crops, while the southern grasslands are renowned for dairy produce and high quality horses.  Recent events have convinced succeeding Margrafen that Ober Nord Westfalen must be capable of producing sufficient arms to defend herself, accordingly small arms factories and cannon foundries have been established at Friederichsburg and Wilhelmstadt.  The establishment of a powder mill is also planned.

Ober Nord Westfalen occupies a strategic position for the Baltic - North Sea trade and also acts as an entre-pot between the Baltic and North Sea maritime trade.  Although trans-shipment overland is more expensive than the cost of sea-borne movement, it is, particularly in winter, much safer.  This trade, due to the import and export duties imposed, yields a welcome increment to the state coffers.  The present Margraf has plans to have constructed a shipping canal from Eckenforde to Husum across the northern isthmus linking the Baltic and North Seas, to enable the trans-shipping of cargos without the need to unload and load ships.  For which facility - so it is commonly held -he intends to impose a hefty tariff.
